THE SELF-PORTRAIT… TOWARDS A COMMON WORK
Toujours connectés au
réel du terrain, souvent engagés dans une altérité co-créatrice avec les personnes
qu’ils rencontrent, prenant de plus en plus la mesure du « pouvoir des
images », les photographes inscrits dans les Nouvelles écritures de la photographie documentairene représentent plus seulement le monde qui se trouve devant leur
« objectif », ils s’y confrontent, s’y affectent, s’y cherchent et souvent
s’y trouvent.
Dans ce travail de soi, les photographes documentaires ont de plus en plus conscience d’être partie prenante d’une transformation du monde. Porteurs de récits personnels ou collectifs, intimes et politiques, les questionnements que soulèvent ces photographes aident à construire notre perception du réel, à nourrir notre imaginaire et nos récits du monde, et à rétablir le lien avec l’invisible.
Avec L’Autoportrait, proposition est faite de faire apparaître le travail qu’accomplissent les photographes lorsqu’ils autodocumentent par le médium photographique leur relation d’altérité avec le monde : reconnaissance de soi en l’autre et de l’autre en soi. L’autoportrait ne parle pas que de soi mais révèle la part collective qu’il porte, et ouvre à un commun de l’œuvre.
Pour un engagement photographique à être documentaire plutôt que faire du documentaire.

Always connected to the reality of the field, often engaged in a co-creative otherness with the people they meet, taking more and more the measure of the "power of images", the photographers registered in the Observatory of the New Writings of Documentary Photography do not represent no longer just the world in front of their lens, they confront it, concern themselves with it, seek themselves in it and often find themselves there.

Hiroh Kikai 鬼海 弘雄 – Asakusa Portraits

Hiroh Kikai (1945-2020) philosophe de
formation et photographe autodidacte est devenu une figure majeure du monde de
la photographie japonaise. Pour Kikai, l'appareil photo capture non seulement le sujet,
mais aussi l'âme du photographe. "Comme
je suis photographe, je n’oublie pas qu'on peut tromper avec des mots, mais pas
avec des images".
En 2004 avec son livre Personail remporte à la fois le 23ème Domon Ken Awards et le prix annuel de la Photographic Society of Japan "PSJ ". En 2009, ICP et Steidl publient Asakusa Portraits, une compilation beaucoup plus importante de sa série Persona, et en 2019 avant sa mort, Chikuma Shobo a publié une collection de ses portraits d'Asakusa pris de 2005 à 2018 sous le nom de PERSONA The Final Chapter.

Hiroh Kikai (1945-2020) trained philosopher and
self-taught photographer became a major figure in the world of Japanese
photography. For Kikai the camera not only captures the subject but also the
soul of the photographer. “As I am a
photographer, I admonish myself that one can deceive with words, but not with
pictures”.
In 2004 with his book Persona won both the 23rd Domon Ken Awards and the annual prize of the Photographic Society of Japan "PSJ". In 2009, ICP and Steidl co-published Asakusa Portraits, a much larger compilation of his Persona series, and in 2019 before his death Chikuma Shobo published a collection of his Asakusa portraits taken from 2005 to 2018 under the name PERSONA The Final Chapter.
